# Why Email Might Be the Best Community App Ever!

So, I made a highly controversial video the other day. (Ok *not that controversial* but you gotta open with a hook!) 😂

**The question was:** which is the best community app to use? And I said it was email.

What I said was: use email until you find out what people are going to use.

And that is because every time you introduce a different application, a different website, a different platform — whether it's Slack or WhatsApp or Mighty Networks or what comes with your coworking space software — you fragment your community.

You fragment your team because you have to send them to different places. And you fragment your community.

If you're just doing one channel, everyone knows everything is going to happen on email, and that's where to look.

And then you can put those other channels in the email. But it's a bit hard to get the email into the other channels.

You need to get this consistent rhythm through your community. And as a result of that, you will introduce other people in the community to each other. They know what's going on. More people will meet each other.

And it'll be very easy to tell the story of your community because it's very easy to follow. Whereas everywhere else it gets fragmented.

In the [London Coworking Assembly](https://londoncoworkingassembly.com/?ref=berniejmitchell.com) we've always avoided having a group chat. Back in 2015, we had a Facebook group with hundreds and hundreds of people, and we posted events in there. But a lot of people did not want to spend time in a Facebook group or be on Facebook at all, and we had endless conversations about which app to use.

But what worked is emailing people a link to an event and emailing people every week. It was about that time that the weekly newsletter for the London Coworking Assembly started.

Everybody who runs some kind of community has the 'what app should we use?' conversation a few times a year. There is no cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all answer to 'what works' — but email is a good place to start as you see what is going to fly with your community.
