That silence between visits is where the community dies. It is where people drift. It is where a corporate chain down the road can steal a member with a cheaper desk before you even know they were thinking of leaving.

Most independent operators never ask what happens in those 128 hours. They obsess over the 40 hours. The coffee. The chairs. The WiFi. The stuff the corporate spaces can buy in bulk.

The Room is Not the Community

I have been working for myself for 20 years, and for 15 of them I have been running and working closely with independent coworking spaces across London.

In 2013 I was one of the first members at Main Yard Studios in Hackney. It was one of the hardest years of my life. I was struggling mentally. Every morning a fellow member named

Eleanor would ask me: "What are you working on today?" Because of her, I had to think about what I was going to do, rather than hoping I would figure it out by the time I got to my desk.

That gentle solidarity, just having somewhere to go and people to talk to, meant I got a lot more work done that year.

That is what a real community does. It is not a room with desks. It is civic infrastructure.

I have spent 15 years helping independent spaces stop acting like hotels and start operating like neighbourhood anchors.
